Geriatric Consultants Can Help Families as Parents Age
Dollars & Sense
By Denice Gierach
As published in the Naperville Sun – June 15, 2008
As the population ages and particularly our parents age, it is appropriate and helpful to use the services of a geriatric consultant. A number of companies offer a large variety of services depending on your family’s needs. These firms are part patient advocate and part mediators with the family when required.
For instance, on many occasions it is necessary to determine whether mom or dad are able to live independently in their own home. While you might determine that mom or dad are not able to live by themselves anymore, a geriatric consultant may be able to step in, talk with your parent, evaluate the parent’s health as well as their home and surroundings. They also attempt to involve the parent in the decision, which, is a huge step for aging parents to take.
Sometimes, it is appropriate to have that parent live in assisted care. Many times, however, with the addition of a part-time care assistant and modifying the home environment to include items that would extend the time that the senior parent may be able to live in his or her own home semi-independently. This may involve a structural change to the residence, such as an elevator or chair to allow the senior to go to the second floor or remodel the first floor to accommodate another bedroom or making sure that the proper on-site caretaker is there to assist with chores around the home.
The geriatric consultant also can help to mediate between siblings, many of whom may have a different idea of how to help their parent. One sibling may feel that the parent would be better off in a nursing home or assisted care, while another may determine that the parent should stay in his or her home. Senior parents normally have enough of their own fears to deal with and tend to react negatively toward the conflicts between their children over what will happen with their lives.
If the parent has had extensive medical bills that need to be sorted or reimbursement needs to be applied for, many geriatric consultants may supply this need. The bottom line is that using a geriatric consultant will give your family piece of mind, as many of my clients can attest to.

www.balancedhealthtoday.com http Regular exercise and/or increased aerobic fitness are associated with a decrease in all-cause mortality and morbidity in middle-aged and older adults.2,3 Subgroup analysis of the Harvard Alumni study found that modest increases in life expectancy were possible even in those patients who did not begin regular exercise until age 75.11 Mortality rates were also lower in those patients who did not begin regular exercise until late in life compared with patients who were active only in younger years and then subsequently stopped exercising.11 Thus, it is never too late for patients to benefit from physical activity. The health benefits of exercise follow a hyperbolic dose-response curve. Those patients who go from none to some exercise receive the greatest health benefits, while further increases in activity levels bring progressively smaller improvements.12 Physicians can have the greatest overall impact by helping their sedentary patients to become active. Understanding Geriatric-Specific EMR
Taking are of the elderly is a responsibility not just of the immediate famiy but also of those health care providers who are specializing in geriatrics. The study and care of the aging process is essential so to give those elderly people the medical interventions they need in order to achieve comfort and favorable health conditions as they age. Geriatrics has been considered one of the important specializations in medicine since it covers a large population needing it. Geriatric emr is now considered the ultimate ally of health care providers specializing for the need of the aged because of its ability to hasten and ease out the provision of interventions for adults.
The use of electronic medical records system in geriatrics ensures that the health care providers and the patients are able to record important details regarding their health conditions. Alzheimer’s and diabetes are very common adult illnesses which could be catered to by the geriatric emr in a more efficient and reliable manner compared to manual recording of medical background. The geriatrics experts will be able to grab the chance of allowing access when even offline and be able to run simultaneously as many programs as needed.
In order to make sure that you are opting for the right system, there are only two things which you need to make sure before deciding. The first one is your ability to ask for a demonstration of how the geriatric emr program could be used. The demonstration will help you infer if the program is making use of a friendly interface that will reduce the complexities of usage. On the other hand, you should also check on the completeness of features so that you will relieve yourself of hassles of paying for something not worth your money and effort. Staying spry in old age
A new study that followed more than 600 San Antonio residents over a 10-year period found that older Mexican Americans were a lot less likely to become frail than Anglos, after adjusting for differences in income and health.

Elderly individuals (can be called geriatric) are susceptible to a number of foot specific conditions. Some of these conditions can leave individuals disabled if they are not prevented and/or taken care of. Some of these common foot related conditions include: arthritis, ingrown toenails, fungal nails, diabetic ulcers, and corns/calluses. Proper geriatric foot care can minimize these common problems among the elderly.
Geriatric Foot Care Information
Many things change with age. When it comes to health…there are more changes than in any other area. One main disadvantage that comes with being elderly is the decrease of circulation to the lower portions of the body. This decreased circulation can be combineed with another common geriatric issue, diminished sensation, can often result in skin breakdown or infection. The geriatric group as a whole is less active, less agile and may find that they have difficulty maintaining proper hygiene of their feet. They may experience either shortness of breath or dizziness when they attempt to bend over to inspect or clean their feet. These changes can be due to common problems amongst the elderly like arthritic changes or muscle weakness.
Maintaining feet properly can be difficult for elderly individuals. But proper foot care can lead to an increase in the general health of the feet. It can lead to a decrease in the risk for suffering from certain conditions/diseases. Proper geriatric foot care can aid elderly patients in saying healthy and active. They are more likely to maintain their day to day activities. Individuals of the geriatric group should visit their podiatrist regularly to increase their chances for healthy feet; prevention and proper maintenance are the best treatments for most conditions.
Inspecting feet on a daily basis will enable elderly patients to get treatment quickly for any potential anomalies. Avoid walking barefoot. Discuss the potential benefits of orthotics with a podiatrist. Keep feet clean, warm and dry. Use lotion and powder as necessary. Trim toenails straight across. Never use commercial corn pads or ointments.Avoid sitting with the knees crossed; it reduces circulation. Seek surgical intervention for chronic pain or irritation.
When it comes to the geratric group…the ability to remain ambulatory may be the only dividing line between institutionalization and remaining an active, viable member of society. This makes good foot care an essentia for the elderly who prize remaining independent.
Recovery from Geriatric Foot Care:
As geriatric foot care is a daily routine rather than a procedure of any sort there is no recovery time required. But the institution of a daily foot care regime designed to keep geriatric patient’s healthy and active is a positive movement in almost every case.

Combat Stress but also increase well being by means of a soothing geriatric massage
Geriatric massage therapy was designed to meet the specific needs of the elderly. It involves the gentle manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and increase range of motion. Geriatric massage often includes passive or active movement of the joints as well.
Normally limited to about 30 minutes (so as not to overextend the health restrictions of the client), geriatric massage sessions usually begin with the gentle massaging of the hands and feet. Stiffness and pain in the feet, shoulders, and legs is addressed with a soothing stretching motion by the massage therapist. Depending on the health and comfort level of the client, at times the therapist may use pressure that is a bit more intense to increase flexibility that is required in the shoulders and back.
Geriatric massage also helps to:
- Increases blood circulation to reduce the effects of diabetes and other diseases;
- Improves lymphatic flow to aid in the elimination of toxic substances from the body;
- Combats the symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression;
- Improves balance, posture and flexibility;
- Reduces arthritic pain and increases joint mobility;
Improves quality of sleep.
As we age, we become more susceptible to such illnesses as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and Parkinson’s disease. Many elderly people also tend to feel anxiety, loneliness and/or depression. Geriatric massage can lessen the symptoms of such conditions and in doing so, improve blood circulation, increase one’s level of physical activity and provide an overall greater sense of well-being.
Other massage techniques (such as the Swedish massage) can cause pain and bruising … therefore they are not recommended for the elderly. Geriatric massage takes into account the fact that as we get older, we experience more stiffness in our joints and a lower threshold for pain, so the therapist must pay special attention to any discomfort that the client may be experiencing so he/she can adjust their technique to make the client feel more comfortable. A lot of massage therapists choose to use creams, lotions or oils for the geriatric massage to nourish their clients’ delicate skin and enhance the experience.
More and more doctors everywhere are beginning to accept geriatric massage therapy … but as an addition to other required treatment…not as a substitute. Although geriatric massage has few known side effects and is a very gentle procedure, if you or someone you know is considering geriatric massage therapy, be sure to speak with your primary care physician before proceeding. And remember that as with any other type of medical procedure, continuity is key. The more you participate, the greater the benefits you’ll enjoy.
One of the major attributes that makes geriatric massage therapy so popular is the use of what is known as “touch” therapy. Many elderly people can experience feelings of loneliness and isolation which can lead to depression. Touch therapy – by way of geriatric massage – helps to eliminate those feelings and promote a greater sense of well being. The feelings of anxiety and stress disappear and are replaced by a reduction in aches and pains and a stronger immune system.

Combat Stress and promote well being using a relaxing massage therapist
A massage therapist is trained in the art of “touch” therapy, which was designed to provide relief from pain, to sooth overworked, tired muscles, to reduce stress and tension, assist with the rehabilitation process after surgery or injury and promote an overall feeling of well-being. This is accomplished this by the expert manipulation of the soft tissue muscles of the body, in this very popular form of bodywork.

Deep Tissue Massage Relieve Hurts Sooner
When dealing with deep tissue pain, you need to do more than what I was doing. A deep tissue massage, as I discovered is specifically aimed at realigning deep muscle layers, stiff necks, shoulders and lower back pain. Bands of painful tissue can cause chronic muscle tension and discomfort. A deep tissue massage involves deep slow rubbing that concentrates on specific areas. It gets into the connective tissue, not just the superficial tissue.
Back Massage Relieve Aches Faster
Don’t you love medicine? Would you prefer the massage-fix or long term pain medication? Certainly pain relief has come a long way, but consider this. In 1996, the Atlanta Olympic medical team decided that they would have a masseuse on hand in case of injury.
Chair Massage Ease Cramps Faster
Do you work too hard and have no time to take care of yourself? Do you need some time to relax? Of course you need it, of course you do not have the time. Between family and work there is no time for yourself. Guess what, you may work for a company that provides relief. This relief may come in a chair massage.
Sports Massage Remedy Muscle Spasms Faster
A typical commercial massage table has an easily cleaned, heavily padded surface, and a horseshoe-shaped support for the head that allows one to breathe easily while lying face down and can be stationary or portable. This is cleaned between massages, keeping everything very hygienic. An orthopedic pillow or bolster can be used to correct body positioning. Sometimes, mats are used.
Therapeutic Massage Ease Cramps More Effectively
The more I learn about massage in general, the more differences I find between regular spa and therapeutic massage. A day massage (with a professional rather than an intern) is just to feel good, relaxed, even peaceful. In my learning, I have realized that there are so many massages available, so many techniques, even a pregnancy massage! If only I had known. It is all a very civilized affair.
Swedish Massage Relieve Cramps Faster
With any massage, special equipment is used for Swedish massage. As these therapists are self-employed, he/she will have his/her own equipment consisting of a table with a horseshoe shaped head support for ease of breathing while lying face-down. It has a padded surface which is easy to keep clean and remain hygienic. Mats and pillows are also used for additional support. With the increased interest in massage therapy, this job field is growing.
Body Massage Ease Muscle Spasms Sooner
There are many benefits to full-body massage. It promotes improved sleep and relaxation, eases stiff joints, aids circulation and digestion. The skin, as well as many internal organs can benefit from it. The warmth of the hands moving over the subject of the massage will warm and relax the skin. A full body massage technique involves a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers.
Pregnancy Massage Alleviate Aches Due to Pregnancy Sooner
When pregnant, we all know that we must, not only take care of ourselves, but also of the new baby growing within us. We have many feelings, some of them stress, anxiety, depression, as well as joy of the wonders and challenges ahead. All these feelings are normal, and can be alleviated a bit, unbe knownst to us through a pregnancy massage.
